UNESCO Conference in Paris
Sacred Sites International was invited to an international symposium jointly sponsored by UNESCO, the French National Center for Scientific Research, and the French National Museum of Natural History on September 22-25, 1998. The topic was Natural Sacred Sites, Biological Diversity and Cultural Integrity. The interdisciplinary conference involved over two hundred presenters from around the world in the fields of ethnobotony, ecology, anthropology, conservation biology, religious studies, geography, history, and law.

In a wide variety of societies and environments, natural areas deemed to be sacred have received special treatment. In recent years, conservation specialists and ecologists have become increasingly aware of the existence of these sites and have seen in them a demonstration of the capacity of traditional societies to conserve biodiversity in situ. This awareness can be used to learn about natural resource management and environmental sustainability.

The Sacred Sites International presentation was on Petroglyph National Monument: An Endangered Sacred Circle of Biodiversity that fosters Cultural Integrity. The presentation showed how all aspects of Pueblo culture and religion are intertwined with the biological species present at this sacred site. The proposes highway through the Monument, the encroaching housing developments, and the ensuing vandalism and littering, denigrate the site, deplete its natural resources, and ultimately lead to the loss of Pueblo culture.

Sacred Sites International would like to thank Friends of the Albuquerque Petroglyphs, notably Ike Eastvold and Hart Schwarz for their assistance in preparing for the symposium. They provided valuable reports, photographs, and books that were useful in learning about the natural resources of the Monument. Mike Medrano, Natural Resource Specialist at the Monument also provided brochures and information on references that were used in the SSIF presentation.
