Dutch Burial Mound Endangered
Sacred Sites International Action Alert
Updated March 2008
A burial mound dating from about 2500 BC was discovered in the Dutch province
of Drenth in 2000. The oldest burials were of an adult and two children with
additional burials added during subsequent era. The site was being excavated
and variously deconstructed and studied. There was originally a plan to turn
the site into an animal park and Sacred Sites International joined member, John
Palmer, in mounting a Letter-Writing Campaign to protest such an action.
Subsequently, the site was legally protected and there is, according to Palmer, a
plan by Dutch “authorities to engender a better understanding among the public
of these oldest architectural (sacred dolmens) remains in the country.”
