Who Considers it Sacred? The Samie People of Norway
Significance: The rock carvings at Alta date to 6000 years old, and represent hunting scenes that illustrate the way of life of the Sami people. The Sami were very much tied to the land and the hunt, as their lives revolved totally around reindeer hunt.
Preservation Status: The Alta Petroglyphs have been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to ensure their preservation.
