Location: The Ohio Valley, Ohio, USA
Official Listing: National Historic Landmark
Significance: The Great Serpent Mound, built between 1500 and 3000 years ago, is a 1/4 mile-long earthwork representing a snake swallowing an egg. Its significance is still unknown, but it is of intense interest to historians and archaeologists.
The Threat: Commercial development
Preservation Status: The Great Serpent Mound is recognized as a National Historic Landmark. In the early 1990s, a condominium complex, convention center, and of course, a golf course were proposed at the Great Serpent Mound, but the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency thankfully denied the project after it was found that a proposed man-made lake and dam might have destroyed the mound itself.
