Location: SW of Lhasa, Tibet
Who Considers it Sacred? Tibetans
Significance: Considered one of Tibet’s four most sacred lakes.
The Threat: Industrial development
Preservation Status: China has already built and is using a major hydroelectric plant at the lake. The plant will drain water from this beautiful scenic area, while another plant is to pump river water back into it. This may damage the delicate balance of the lake’s ecosystem. In 1996, the International Committee of Lawyers for Tibet helped to negotiate and draft a resolution to ask China to address these concerns.
